Melkutusta Tuulen ukko, tuulen akka
The first Five-Years.
In
1991 several musicians of the State Song and Dance Ensemble of Karelia "Kantele"
took part in celebration of City Day in Tubingen (Baden-Vurtenberg,
Germany). Accompanying instrumental group of the ensemble decided to
gladden Tubingen citizens with their gay music (to feel themselves
strolling musicians) and earn a little for beer, went to the central
pedestrian street and began playing. A German gentleman passed by
karelian musicians that moment, stopped and listened sparkling finnish
and karelian melodies. As soon as the musicians made a pause, the
stranger approached them, introduced himself as Rolf Gruber, a chief of
music society of Hedelfingen and suggested that the guys should visit
Spring Fair in May 1992 in one of the district of Stuttgart.
Exactly that spring of 1992, time of the first independent tour, the
musicians consider to be time of "Myllarit" (The Millers) birth. By the
way, the name was accepted practically without other variants in one of
the first rehearsals of a newborn ensemble. The sense of this
workers-and-peasants word since that time is supported by the members
during all this time. They do their best to mill rich deposits of
karelian folk and pour water of popularity on the mill of native
Karelia.
The
first staff of the group was: Alexandr Bukadorov, Sergey Zobnev, Elena
Samsonovich, Andrew Varkentin, Maria Frolova, Dmitri Deomin. Germany, a
historical motherland of the group, opened their eyes and directed them
on the independent way of the development. The guys began to train, to
create their own repertoire, the base of what was music "pelimanni"-
traditional finnish and karelian melodies - very popular with audience
and several russian songs
Just before the tour to Germany in 1993 violinist Elena Samsonovich left
the group and on her place came Jhanna Kudryavtzeva ("Jhorik").
1994 was a year of the beginning of the ensemble promotion in native
Karelia. Two years of tours abroad gave the musicians faith in their own
forces. To represent the multinational republic they include new finnish,
karelian and ingermanland songs. That time Arto Rinne with his perfect
Finnish, was invited, and one more violinist Tatiana Umnyakova. A
director of the group Sergey Zobnev spread a broad activity on the
advertising of the band and unknown to many people music style "world
music". "Myllarit" brand has become popular, there appear some articles
in newspapers, radio-interviews. The group began to prepare to the first
big concert-presentation in Petrozavodsk. In May 1994 Karelian State TV
Company shoot a film "Homeless children of karelian folk", in which the
participants not only sang and played, but as well discussed modern way
of development of folk music. In autumn and winter of the same year
shooting group of the TV Company under the guidance of a popular TV
journalist Andrew Tzunski made TV comedy "Hotel at a kidnapped folkman"
with all the staff playing the leading parts. Theater stars as Gennadi
Zalogin, Igor Zlenko(Billy) and others were also invited. On the 22 of
April 1995 г. there was a first big concert-presentation of "Myllarit"
group in the Finnish Theater and it was shot and broadcasted by
Petrozavodsk TV company "NIKA".
The
year 1995 for "Myllarit" was a beginning of an active conquer of
Finland. Touring schedule thickened, the musicians got more and more
invitations, took part in prestige festivals: "Music week in Vantaa -
95", "Kuopio dances and sings - 95".
Аalready in spring 1996 musicians concluded a treaty with finnish
producer firm "Mipu Music" and recorded the material for their first CD
"Eta pravda" ("It is truth").
The first tour in the United States (Colorado and Texas) in winter 1996-
1997 made a great impression on "Myllarit". After joined concert with
american group "Samples" the musicians decided to change sounding and
soon percussion instruments appeared in the ensemble together with a
perspective student of music college Andrew Lukin. Though he was a
student he was rather popular due to the project of Alexandr Ulaev group
"RED'J".
The first long-expected CD "ETA PRAVDA" came out in Finland and was a
success among the listeners as well as with DJs of finnish
radio-stations. The channel "Radio Suomi" called a song with the same
name as the disk "Eta Pravda" as "an unexpected hit of the spring".
CD presentation took place in Helsinki in a well-known rock-club "Tavastia"
and in Petrosavodsk, "Machinostroitel" Palace of Culture was full during
the concert devoted to the 5-years of the group.
The second five-years.
In
June 1997 "Myllarit" had a concert in the very heart of finnish capital
Helsinki on Senat Square in big festival of North Karelia province as
guests from Easten Karelia. In Autumn of the same year a large finnish
firm "Finlandia records", international distributor of which is "Warner
Music International" bought from "Mipu Music" rights on the album "Еta
Pravda" and published new series of CD for selling in many countries of
the world "Innovator Series". In July 1997 already popular "Myllarut"
took part in the main music TV program "MTV-3" channel (Finland) "Levyraati".
Having conquered Finland, in Augist 1997 "Мyllarit" went touring to
Norway to take part in "Telemark" festival. September1997 brought
changes to the group's staff.. Andrew Barkentin (contrabass) was
substituted by a young, full of energy, philosophic idleness and
creative potentiality, the second Finn of the group Andrew Habonen, who
was waiting a permission to settle in the historical motherland.
Traditional annual "Мyllarit" concerts in Petrozavodsk usually held in
so-called red data of calendar and in 1998 it was on the 8-th of March,
devoted to the beautiful part of the mankind and was called "Runes about
love". In Summer 1998 "Мyllarit" participated in the biggest folk
festival of Finland in Kaustunen village and continued to broaden their
concert geography. They were invited to the festival in Tornio (Sweden)
and to the biggest in Europe Edinburg festival (Great Britain). In
Autumn the lads saw off Andrew Habonen to Finland as a place of a
constant residence. A gap was filled by a star of the same "Kantele"
ensemble, a legend of modern karelia music Leo Sevets, masterly playing
traditional folk instruments: 5-strings kantele and jouhikko. With his
coming the performance became notably richer. From the very beginning
the year 1999 was record by a number of tours. In the first days of
January the group took part in boat festival "Folklandia" on "Silja Line"
-"Europe" from Turku to Stockholm and back. "Myllarit" got a title of
the best group of the festival.
In
spring 1999 in Finland there were successful tour together with finnish
women ensemble "Tuzzukat", just after them сразу the musicians went to
Scotland to continue the tour. They found themselves in capital of
Shetland islands Lervik. Later a local newspaper characterized "Myllarit"
concert as "Russian storm over Shetland islands". Having returned to
Finland in the middle of May "Myllarit" flied to the United States, the
tour was organized by american manager Sherry Merrick, who is still
working with the group.
In a mad sequence of tours and countries they born an idea of a new
nostalgic CD of acoustic music from 1992-1993 repertoire . Already in
August 1999in Johunsu (Finland) they record and mix the material for
their second CD. Even now when music style of the group has fully
changed they continue to play old favorite melodies on the acoustic
concerts.
In October 1999 a dream of the group's leaders (director Sergei Zobnev
and artistic leader Alexandr Bukadorov) came true to life - in
Petrozavodsk appeared and began working a Center of Musical Initiatives
"Myllarit". It became a home and a hall for rehearsals for "Myllarit",
the most active and often participant of all actions of the Center of
Music Initiatives. Thanks to the Center Petrozavodsk got a status of a
capital of modern folklore in Russia. An annual international "Folk
marathon", organized by the Center, is the only "world music" festival
of this level in our country.
In December 1999 a new CD of "old melodies" came in Vermont (USA) under
the name "In the light of the white night" . In the beginning of 2000
Jarmo K (JJ Voice, Finland, Joensuu) recorded material for a new СD.
Tour life gallops as it should, "Myllarit" again takes part in
boat-festival "Folklandia", plays in "Kihaus" and 10 weeks perform in
America and Canada. After returning from american tour they mix the
material and at the end of 2000 a new disk "А voi voi!" or "Karelian
fever" was out.
Evidently
an approaching change of centuries made musicians pay their attention on
forgotten Russia. From 16 till 21 of January the group successfully
performed in Moscow, the tour was organized by a producer and a friend
Alexandr Cheparukhin. The performance began not less than from live
program of Dmitri Dibrov "Antropology" on NTV channel. One year later in
winter 2001 "Myllarit" are in Moscow again on the festival, organized by
the group and A.Cheparuhin. It was called simply but tastefully "Myllarit
fiesta". In this event took part all karelian bands of "world music" and
the bands cooperating with "Myllarit" Center: "Reel", "Drolls", "A New
Day","Santtu Karhu & Talvisovat". Media burst with enthusiastic comments
about this enchanting karelian force. In June of the same year "Myllarit"
toured in Western Siberia to the immense festival (the 60-th parallel)
in Surgut. The festival gathered representatives of 14 northern cities
of Russia, Hungary, Denmark, Finland. "Myllarit" shared the main stage
with bands "Kalinov most" , "Chizh and Co", "Auktzion", "Volkov trio" "Tequila
Jazzz", "Mistery Juice" (Scotland). The summer was traditionally spent
touring in the United States and Finland.
The
year of popularity, star recognition and fans love became as well the
year of inner cataclysm. Enlarged earnings as a litmus paper showed who
is who and what aims everybody has got. Creative work came to depression,
leaders attempts to change the situation led to nothing and after the
concert on the City Day the founders of group Alexandr Bukadorov and
Sergei Zobnev left "Myllarit". They still in the group nominally to
carry out the contracts items with foreign managers. The rains of
government went to the hands of active "positioners" Arto Rinne and
Dmitry Deomin. The 11 of September 2001 a few hours after those act of
terrorism in America which were a shock for the whole world , "Myllarit"
being in Michigan state got a massage from Petrosavodsk that the
building of the Center of Music Initiatives on Gogol street,6 had burned
down. On the first floor of the building there was a studio and
rehearsal hall. All equipment of studio and a part of concert equipment
of the ensemble have burned out and the damage was 26000$. It was a
serious struck for unreach musicians, getting no state donations and it
they still recovering from it. The reason of the fire was a criminal
arson of the pub, which was situated just under the Center. At the
meeting of the group they made a decision to continue concerts with the
old staff till the 10-th anniversary. In autumn a new accordionist
Andrew Brazevich and double bas player Roman Ershihin to substitute
Sergei Zobnev and Alexandr Buradorov were invited. A new staff had
rehearsals and even performed at jubilee concert for TV Company "Rarelia".
In January 2002 г. "Myllarit" took part in festival "Celtic connections"
(Glasgow, Scotland).
However,
in the beginning of 2002 the main part of the group asked Sergei and
Sasha (Deda) to return. Dmitry Deomin was suggested to leave the band,
Arto Rinne decided to go out of the staff by his own will.
In March 2002 г. "Myllarit" without rehearsal hall intensively trained
the whole month. The concerts devoted to the 10-th years of the group
though were close to break had a great success. On the 30-th of March
during one of the jubilee concerts in House of Culture "Mashinostroitel"
there was made recording of a new CD "The 10th Spring" which came out at
the end of June 2002. The fans took changes in the group as usual
ordinary change of the staff. For the band this treatment has become the
beginning of new time, a new birth of "Myllarit".
As if "Phoenix raised from the ashes" they are full of strength,
ideas and new music. Life goes on! |
